چکیده
Recently another MITE-like structure, called the integron mobilization unit (IMU), has been described flanking a defective class 1 integron harbouring a carbapenem resistance gene, blaGES-5, in a clinical Enterobacter cloacae strain. Although the IMU sequence is not related to the MITE reported in our study, IMU-based mobilization of the integron could be demonstrated using a transposase provided in trans. Similar mobilization has been described for MITEs. There are no data in the scientific literature on the prevalence of MITEs in clinical bacteria. This is the second report of this 439 bp MITE-like structure, but the first in a clinical strain of the emergent pathogenic species A. baumannii. Moreover, it is a unique structure surrounding an IMP-type carbapenemase, suggesting that this resistance-encoding integron can be mobilized by a transposition-like mechanism. Our study emphasizes the need to determine the genetic context of mobile elements to fully understand the history of and future potential for dissemination of resistance genes.

Detection of highly ciprofloxacin resistance acinetobacter baumannii isolated from patients with burn wound infections in presence and absence of efflux pump inhibitor.
The emergence of fluoroquinolone resistance among A. baumannii isolates is now of particular concern. Phenotypic and genotypic characteristics of resistance to ciprofloxacin among 50 Acinetobacter baumannii isolated from burn wound infections of Tehran were evaluated by E-test and broth microdilution in presence and absence of efflux pump inhibitor phenylalanine- arginine β-naphthylamide (PAβN)...
متن کاملAlterations of gyrA, gyrB, and parC and Activity of Efflux Pump in Fluoroquinolone-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii
OBJECTIVES This study investigated the fluoroquinolone-resistant mechanism of 56 clinical cases of A baumannii infection from 23 non-tertiary hospitals, collected between 2004 and 2006. METHODS Susceptibility testing was performed by broth microdilution and Epsilometer test. Analyses of quinolone resistance-determining region (QRDR) were done by sequencing. The activity of the efflux pump was...
متن کاملThe involvement of mutation in the serine 83 of quinolone resistant determining regions of the GyrA Gene in resistance to ciprofloxacin in Escherichia coli .
Appearance of bacteria resistant to antibacterial agents puts physicians in trouble and threatens the health of the world. The rapid development of bacterial resistance in Escherichia coli to ciprofloxacin makes difficult the treatment of infectious diseases. So, detection of the locations of possible mutations in gyrase A gene ( gyrA ) in these mutants is very important to determine the mech...
متن کامل[Mutations in gyrA and gyrB genes among strains of Gram-negative bacilli isolated from Chilean hospitals and their relation with resistance to fluoroquinolones].
BACKGROUND A progressive frequency of resistance to fluoroquinolones is observed among Gram-negative bacilli. AIM To investigate the mechanism of resistance to fluoroquinolones mediated by mutations affecting gyrA and gyrB genes in strains of Gram negative bacüli isolated from CMean hospitals. MATERIAL AND METHOD Minimal inhibitory concentration of fluoroquinolones was determined in 91 rand...
متن کاملPhenotypic and molecular characterization of Acinetobacter baumannii clinical isolates from nosocomial outbreaks in Los Angeles County, California.
Multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii strains have increasingly resulted in nosocomial outbreaks worldwide, leaving limited options for treatment. To date, little has been reported on the antimicrobial susceptibilities and genomic profiles of A. baumannii strains from hospital outbreaks in the Greater Los Angeles area. In this study, we examined the susceptibilities and genetic profiles o...
